If you've never heard of it, good, if you have then you know its one of the most restricted movies of 2010. Restricted by governments and film festivals alike.
Film starts off with a child watching pornography, I'm not sure if the child's age is ever mentioned but he's definitely around 10-ish, he's a shaggy, curly haired boy with fine almost feminine features (intentional casting?). The man on the videos is his father, a retired world famous adult film star. With an opening scene like that, the film could have gone either way; quirky situation comedy or a film that can escalate to something more. I didn't know a thing about the film, so i was thinking quirky boundary pusher. Fortunately (?) i was wrong.
It can be classified as a horror movie, in the same way Requiem for A Dream was. Gritty tale about a man who agrees to come back from retirement to participate in a film artist's project, all he has to 'do is perform.'
The actual project he's agreed to participate in is unknown, we slowly figure it out as Milos (the main character) does.
I'm going to describe a scene that happens relatively early in the film. Its not for the squeamish, but i feel like i need to describe a situation from the film so that you get some sort of context. So, spoiler(!)
With an ear piece telling where to go and what to say he enters an abandoned orphanage where he watches a girl dressed as Alice (From Wonderland) getting yelled and physically abused by what could be her mom and dad. As the days go the situations the director puts him in become more uncomfortable for him; Told to walk into a room with a spot light over a man beating a naked blond women. He's instructed to whip his cock out, the man beating the women disappears out of the spot light and disappears, the bloodied woman begins to crawl seductively towards him. As soon as her mouth touches his cock a small spot light goes on showing the Alice girl sitting and watching him, next to him two projected films begin, scenes of Alice eating a Popsicle and applying make up. When Milos begins to object the woman bits down on his dick and a man comes into the light to hold him down to make sure he doesn't try to leave, his ear piece is telling him to hit her. She won't let go unless you hit her, it says, punch her! Alice is still sitting and staring the the films are ridiculously innocent its uncomfortable. The blond bites down harder and he hits her, punching her a couple times until she lets go. Her mouth dripping with blood she stays on her knees and looks up at him, ear piece tells him to cum on her face, he does. The little girl in the projected film finally finishes the Popsicle.
The film is violent and misogynistic, yeah. Forced against his will to watch movies of a girl who happens to be sitting in the same room watching him get blown by a woman was recently beaten by a man who held him in place until he punched the women in the face to stop her from biting his dick. i guess i could have just said that...
The situations become aggressively heightened and out of control. Things were moderately bearable, that is, until the final scene. Now, i don't really have a squeamish stomach, but I've never felt so victimized by a film before. This man really had no control over the situations he was being placed in, and the idea of not having control over your self and life is frightening to me. Its the main reason why I've never experimented with most drugs. In the context of the film things happened logically. Great storytelling with a gut wrenching plot. I feel like I'm trying to convince myself that it's alright for liking this film, which i guess i am. It's a fascinating experience but I don't think I'll ever watch it again.
