| Not sure who's supposed to be the scary one here? |
I'd never heard of this movie until a couple nights ago after a friend mentioned it, after watching the trailer i realized its something right up my alley. It's set in Canada, middle of winter, in the basement of a church, where the three main (and pretty much only characters) do their local morning news cast.
Through out the morning they get reports of riots and mobs herding through the town and near by county. For the first 40 minutes we slowly learn (from the field reporter) how dire the circumstances outside become, never actually experiencing or seeing any of it. The tension built within those minutes are absolutely nail biting. The audio production is never anything i pay particular attention to while watching a movie, but in a movie that deals and is carried by the idea of sound its astounding.
Never actually seeing anything, their immediate reaction is to dismiss it, that is until their entire broadcast is interrupted by a French speaking warning. At that point i needed to pause it and take a moment. I love horror movies, i love not knowing what the fuck is going on. When a logical government response is thrown in with this weirdness it freaks me out.
Later, once the local begin to show up, banging against the church windows repeating the same single word/phrase. Turns out, the thing infecting them is actually a sort of audio virus, and it's only the English language that's infected. The people rioting/zombified are those that have been infected by the virus and the word they're repeating is the word that helped the virus get to them, they repeat the word as a sort of defense system, trying to lessen the definition of the word-thus getting rid of the virus. I know it sounds silly, i guess it is. Its a high concept zombie movie that doesn't disappoint. A new twist on an old idea.
It wasn't until afterwards that i realized the version i had (that ends right at black) wasn't the whole movie. Through out the credits we hear other radio broadcasts, all dealing with the same situation through out the world. Then a quick scene, which i haven't been able to see yet. I'll add on once i see that last scene, it sounds like it completely changes the dynamic of the completed film.
